Aims

To serve the greater Muslim community in Melbourne by providing a platform for spiritual devotion, education, social integration and self-development based on the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Holy Ahl al-Bayt (‘a.s).

Who We Are

Panjtan Society of Victoria Inc (PSV) is a community organisation in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, registered with the Australian Charity and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC). The main objective is to provide facilities and conduct programs conducive to the educational, spiritual and social welfare of Urdu speaking Shia Muslim Community and to promote greater harmony and cooperation among them and with the members of other faiths and other communities at large. Its aim is to share the teachings of religion of Islam to inculcate better understanding of Islamic values and practice according to the teachings of Ithna Asheri (Twelver) Islamic School of Thought.

Our History

Our Journey and Historical Legacy

1989

Panjtan Society of Victoria was founded in July 1989 by a select group of migrant professionals from the Indian subcontinent, who settled in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria state. Panjtan Society of Victoria (PSV) was the first Urdu-speaking community organisation in Victoria of Shia Ithna Asheri school of Islam, serving the community located mostly in Northern and Western region of Melbourne.

1990

The Sunday Panjtan School was established in 1990 to conduct educational classes for the children and youth of the community, teaching Islamic studies and language. Panjtan School is currently one of the largest weekend schools in Victoria teaching subject areas in Fiqh, Akhlaq, Quran, History and Urdu from grade 1 to grade 10.

1990 - 1996

Initially the community used to hold religious gatherings and Majalis at private homes. Soon, as the community members grew, the PSV organised programs, prayers and majalis in hired community halls regularly until 1996.

1997

In 1997, the PSV community bought a 6-court squash centre in St Albans suburb of north-west Melbourne and named it as Panjtan Centre. The Panjtan Centre was purchased with funding from the local community and from the World Federation of KSI organisation. Since then, the Panjtan Centre is serving as the main hub of educational, religious and social programs of the community.

2000 - 2016

In July 2000, the world-renowned scholar (Alim) Maulana Sadiq Hasan was appointed as the first Resident Alim of PSV. He served for four years. Then from January 2006, renowned scholar Maulana Abul Qasim Rizvi provided his services as Resident Alim of PSV for 10 years. Then from January 2016, another reputed scholar Maulana Kumail Mehdavi served as Resident Alim of PSV for 8 years. All three scholars are settled in Melbourne providing their services to wider Shia Muslim community in Australia.

2022

In 2022, a Funeral Service facility was installed at Panjtan Centre, St Albans.
